Ticks, part of the arachnid family, live in wooded areas, such as bushes and lawns, and feed on people, pets, and wildlife. In Iowa, ticks are most active from March through November — the same months you are most likely to spend time outdoors. Because ticks can carry diseases, it’s important to be able to recognize the common symptoms of a tick bite.
No Symptoms
Oftentimes, people with tick bites experience no symptoms. This is due to the anesthetic properties found in tick saliva. Because tick bites are typically painless, ticks are able to burrow into their victim’s skin and remain attached until they’ve had their fill of blood, which can take several days. Once the tick has finished its meal, they will simply drop off of their host. This entire process can go unnoticed.
Because tick bites are often asymptomatic, it’s important to thoroughly check your skin after you’ve been outdoors. While ticks may not be able to be felt, they are very easily seen. Use a mirror to check over your entire body, including under your arms, inside your ears, and the backs of your knees.
Allergic Reactions
If the host is allergic to ticks, they may experience a reaction to a tick bite. Allergic reactions can include skin rashes, raised areas, and lumps. In mild cases, you may also experience pain, swelling, or even a burning sensation. Severe reactions can include anaphylaxis, in which case it is recommended to call 9-1-1 immediately.
Tick-Borne Diseases
Ticks are known for spreading Rocky Mountain spotted fever and Lyme disease, both of which can take several weeks to appear. Signs of Rocky Mountain spotted fever include a red, spotted rash, fever, and vomiting. Signs of Lyme disease include a bull’s eye rash, fatigue, and muscle aches. Note that symptoms of tick-borne disease are often non-specific, so if you feel ill after a tick bite, contact your doctor right away.
