Clover mites are called clover mites for one simple reason: they like to eat clover. These tiny red insects can be found all over Iowa, including the Des Moines area. While they don’t bite, spread disease, or pose a threat to humans or pets, they can be a nuisance. Here’s what you need to know about clover mites.
How to Identify a Clover Mite
A clover mite essentially looks like a tiny bright red crab with antennae. They only measure between ⅛ to ¼ of an inch long. Chances are, you won’t see a lone clover mite. These little insects tend to move around by the thousands.
When Clover Mites are Active
Clover mites are most active during spring months, as that’s when their eggs begin hatching. They also enjoy the moderate temperatures of fall. However, they can be found all year round. The only times you’re not likely to see them are when the temperatures become more extreme in the summer and winter.
Why You See Clover Mites
These insects find their way to your home via clovers on your lawn, then slip in through cracks on the outside. Clover mites only eat plants, such as clover and grass, and fertilized, healthy grass and clover is like a delicacy to them. Aside from lawns, clover mites gather on sidewalks, on brick walls and on the sunny side of buildings.
How to Deal with Clover Mites
Clover mites don’t bite or transmit disease, but they can be a nuisance if you find them in your home. You may be able to get rid of them by doing maintenance in your home and yard. Mowing your grass short and removing clovers will remove them from the outdoors. Vacuuming them up and immediately throwing out the vacuum bag can often eliminate them inside your home. These bugs only reproduce outdoors, so this should solve the problem. If it doesn’t, or if it’s too much to deal with, call a professional pest control company.
